I've been living in B...I get this question too! I've been living in Brazil for just over a year and a half now and I knew basically no Portuguese when I arrived (I can't really count 'obrigada' and 'frango'!) Me and my (now) husband spoke in English, but as I've learnt more Portuguese we've incorporated it more and more into our daily lives.
